Highways

Union County is served by several major roadways, including Interstate 485 (I-485), the auxiliary interstate highway encircling Charlotte. U.S. 74 is North Carolina’s expressway connecting Charlotte with the port city of Wilmington. The intersection of I-485 and U.S. 74 serves as a major gateway into Union County, with easy access onto the Monroe Expressway – or U.S. Route 74 Bypass – which provides a controlled-access toll road running parallel to U.S. 74.

Other state highways within Union County include N.C. 16, a roadway that provides direct access to uptown Charlotte, and U.S. 601, which stretches across the Carolinas.
